On My Lips: Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie

Hey all,

Yes, I have jumped on the bandwagon and purchased some of the well acclaimed Revlon Lip Butters. But before I start with the review, I have a bit of ranting to do.

The prices us Australian girls get charged for products is insane and personally I think it is completely unjustifiable. The lip butters are a perfect example; how we can get charged $21.95 for something that is $8 in the U.S is completely beyond me. Because of price gaps exactly like this, products that are affordable (and quite often loved for that reason) for our fellow beauty lovers overseas are not as easily accessible for Australian ladies.

What are your thoughts? Does anyone know the 'reason' behind the price gap?

Okay, rant done - on to the review.

Revlon Lip Butters are a famous new-ish product that are a wonderful combination of a lip balm/gloss and a lipstick; they provide moisture as well as colour. I have picked up four lip butters so far, but Berry Smoothie is definitely my favourite shade. For me, it's a perfect 'my lips, but better' shade.

What I Love
- Gorgeous colour- natural and universally flattering.
- Great pigmentation for the product type.
- Very moisturising and feels great on the lips.
- Relatively long lasting.
- Gorgeous packaging.

What I Don't
- The ridiculous price difference between the US and Australia.

Where to Buy: Priceline, Selected Pharmacies and wherever Revlon is sold.

Price: $21.95

Swatch

On My Lips

They are lovely lip products and they do exactly what everyone and his dog/cat/bird/ant? (who hasn't been talking about them?!) claim. I am just not convinced they are worth the larger Australian price-tag.

What do you think?

If  I purchase more, I think I will grab them off eBay from the US - at a much lower price.

Hope you all have a great night! xx

I love that you can see the colour from the top of the packaging.

  1. I love these, and I've bought a few using the BOGOF offer from Priceline, but I'm disgusted with the price difference!
I was told by a friend that it's mostly because of all the taxes Australia has to pay to import, still think it's ridiculous though!

    Lovely colour though :)

  2. I love these! I picked a few up at the BOGOF at Priceline.. that's the only way I would have bought them though! The price-tag is just unbelievable!
Someone told me recently that it was due to all the taxes Australia has to pay... I don't see why we should be punished though! It's all in a bid to stop online shopping (which is why taxes are so high to ship things in) yet it's making us turn to eBay and other websites!
I'll be checking out eBay too! If you find a good seller, I'd be interested :D

    1. Ooh, which ones did you pick up? Exactly, I don't see why we should punished! And you are right, we just end up turning to overseas eBay sellers etc. I have done it with so many other products in the past! I will let you know if I find a good seller! xx

    2. I picked up that colour today actually, two red ones, two pinkish ones and a peachy one.. I can never remember their colours!
But yay, hopefully you find a good seller :D

  4. This colour is gorgeous on you!

I can't believe that price! I actually got mine for $4 on sale (in Canada), and I didn't think they were worth much more than that!

    1. Thank you! :)

I know - it's ridiculous! We get charged through the roof for beauty/cosmetic products here.

  5. oh wow, what a huge price difference! Over here in Canada, we can get them easily for $5-6 and I only get those when they are on sale here.

    1. It's such a massive difference, very unfair! It's the same for most products as well! x

  6. that colour looks so pretty on you!!

It also really gets to me how products that I'd use in South Africa would cost about 3 times the amount here in Kenya. And not just beauty products but clothes also! It's ridiculous.

  7. Great review and swatch!

I was told that US has cheaper prices because the stuff are manufactured there! So we pretty much pay for the lip butter, exporting cost, advertising cost of the launches and a bit of extra so companies can earn profit!

That price is crazy though! They cost £7.99 here.

  9. I wonder if it has anything to do with Australia being an island? In general, it would cost a lot more to get products shipped there, and if the population is smaller, it wouldn't be worth the companies while to ship/sell certain products without marking up the prices drastically. I am also unaware of your dollars value compared to the USD but if it differs at all, that may also have something to do with it.

    1. Never thought of the island thing, there might be something in that - still not fair, haha! And the Australian dollar has been worth more than the US for a while now, so it should be even cheaper for us, not the other way round! :( xx

  10. Everyone is raving about these, I will have to jump on the bandwagon soon. The color looks good on you:) I thought they are expensive for a drugstore brand in the US, maybe I am cheap. I will wait until there is a buy one and get 50% before I get them. I do hear imported goods in Australia are extremely pricey.

    1. They are quite nice, but I'm not sure if they are worth all the hype - so definitely wait until they are on sale! And yeah, our drugstore brands are just expensive ($20 for a mascara etc). xx

  11. Sharleena, I have no idea why the products that are considered budget in the US are so expensive in AUstralia. One of my blog friends, Valentine has discussed the same topic on her blog, she frequently gets her beauty products in Hong Kong while visiting family. Revlon is not a premium cosmetic line and $22 blows my mind because that is what I pay for Nars...and I can only imagine the price of that line in Aus. I can't imagine that Aus is not part of the WTO? The price gap is insane..I feel bad for you!

    1. It's ridiculous! Yeah, I definitely stocked up of products when I visited the US last year :) but sadly, they have all ran out! And we pay $49.00 for a Nars blush here!

They really need to do something about it! Thanks for your thoughts! xx

  12. I was so annoyed at the price diff I refuse to buy them here! However when Priceline had the buy one get one free I was tempted! :P At the end of the day though, over $20 for a tinted lipgloss (which is really what it is) is a ripoff from any manufacturer let alone a standard drug store brand like Revlon.

I hope you didn't pay full price Sharleena! x

    1. You are definitely right, it is a rip off! We have every right to be annoyed!

I bought them on sale thankfully! And if i purchase anymore, they will be from eBay from the US! xx

  13. So true that we get ripped off with prices. I also covered this on my Lip Butter post. The thing is, it's not all taxes (there are some, but nothing that could triple the price), it's not the dollar exchange rate and it's not the product source (made in the US, Pakistan and China) as other countries don't see the same huge price jump.

    1. I will have to check your post out! Yeah, I didn't think it would just be down to taxes or the product source. Hopefully companies start to pay some attention to our complaints! Thanks for your comment! xx

  14. I don't like the price difference at all, it doesn't seem fair for us to pay so much, but there are a lot of different reasons that could contribute. For example Australia has a population of 22million, whilst the US is 310+ million... So when paying for advertising etc the companies get more 'bang for their buck', and sales will be much higher in the US.

Also you have to consider our average and minimum wages here, whilst cosmetics seem really expensive (and probably more so than other products) we do pay more for all sorts of things because we earn more. The US minimum wage is a lot lower than ours, so prices reflect that, which is why tourists often complain that Australia is expensive, yet for us to travel (especially with the dollar going so well) things can be much cheaper - I guess that's a little upside to the situation.

Sorry, bit of a rant - I still hate the fact that Revlon Lip Butters cost $22! (I got 2 from Priceline for the BOGOF deal) but I thought this might shed a little light.

    1. Thanks for your comment and points! It has definitely shed a little bit of light and given me more to consider. I would like to have a look at countries who have around the same statistics as Australia - and see what prices are like there! I think at the end of the day, it is just a ridiculously complicating issue!

I bought my butters in the Priceline sale as well :) xx

  15. The mark-up on these made me FURIOUS. Luckily I got mine in a swap, but the blind nature of this means I'm stuck with the glittery, gritty 'meh' that is Peach Parfait. I would have much preferred a colour like this (which is gorgeous on you, so says the dog/cat/bird/ant). x

    1. I was pretty astounded too, especially after hearing about their affordable US price for WEEKS. It's sad to hear that you didn't get a shade that you wanted :( And thank you! I am glad that you and the dog/cat/bird and ant's think so :) xx
